Franklin Batten

Franklin Eugene Batten, 77, of Indianapolis, IN, passed away peacefully on August 10th, 2025 surrounded by family. The son of Robert F Batten and Patricia (Beck) Batten-Soucie was born in Lebanon, Indiana, on February 19, 1948. Gene grew up in Lebanon and graduated from Lebanon High School.   A proud and decorated U.S. Marine, he served his country from 1966 to 1974 during the Vietnam War and was awarded the Purple Heart for his bravery and sacrifice. His commitment to service extended far beyond the military, as he was a dedicated member of his community, serving as President of his neighborhood HOA for 20 years. His neighbors knew they could always count on him for help, guidance, or simply a friendly conversation.  Gene worked as a machine operator at Diamond Chain, where he was known for his strong work ethic and reliability. Outside of work, he had a love for woodworking, enjoyed tackling house projects alongside his son-in-law and grandsons, traveling and spending time with family.   In 1986, Gene met the love of his life, Paula, they were married in the Fall of 1989 and spent 35 wonderful years together before her passing in the Fall of 2021.  Family was the center of Gene's life. He never missed a school event, sports game, or milestone for his beloved grandchildren. He leaves behind cherished memories as a devoted stepfather, grandfather, brother, and friend. He is survived by his son, Shannon Batten,  two stepchildren, Cris Mabbitt (Andee) and Jill Velikan (Jeff); four grandchildren, Devin Mabbitt, Rachel Macias (Rolando), Sophie Velikan, and Josie Parks (Alex) and one great grandchild Blair Parks along with his brothers, Gary Batten (Debbie), David Wilcox (Julia); Gary Soucie (Fran); sisters, Debbie Snow (Mike), Debra Walters,  many nieces and nephews and his little Bichon Shih Tzu mix puppy, Cotton. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Paula, brother Bobby Batten and sister Barbara Turner.   Gene will be remembered for his patriotism, generosity, and the love he poured into his family, friends, and community. His presence was a steady anchor, and his loss will be deeply felt by all who knew him. Gene will be reunited with the love of his life Paula Batten at Old Union cemetery in Jamestown, Indiana. Graveside services will be held at Old Union Cemetery on September 6th 2025 at 10:00am.
