Katherine Horlander

Katherine “Carol” Horlander passed away peacefully on Friday, February 11, 2022. She was surrounded by family and friends who loved her very much. She was born in Louisville, KY to Matthew Russell Stein, (dec.) and Adele Elizabeth Marker, (dec.). Carol enjoyed her days at Seneca and Cherokee parks and graduated from Atherton High School. She spent many evenings at Ft. Knox entertaining the troops by singing while accompanied by friends on the piano and accordion. Carol worked as a dental hygienist before marrying Robert, (dec.). They headed west to Southern California where he was stationed as a United States Marine Corps fighter pilot and she settled in as a proud military wife. Then here comes the kids! She gave life to four children: Cynthia, Ellen, Robert, and Barbara. She nurtured, cared for, looked after and protected them. Carol supported them in their activities: swimming, football, scouts, and school. Most importantly, she loved them. Carol enjoyed bowling, playing tennis, and was an avid golfer. She loved traveling, history, and new adventures. She also found time for flowers and gardening. A true southern woman, she was kind, generous and accepting towards others. Carol was the hostess with the mostest! She never met a stranger and would talk to anyone. She was a woman of great strength and fortitude. She had an abundance of faith and love which she shared freely. Affectionately known as “Lady”, she is also survived by two granddaughters: Ellie and Andrea, along with a brother, Frances Gilbert Stein, a WWII veteran. She loved her many nieces and nephews, their families and children, and many friends. Services will be at Stevens Mortuary on Thursday, February 17, 2022 from 6 – 8pm and again at St. Christopher Catholic Church on Friday, February 18, 2022 from 9 – 11am followed by Mass at 11:00. Acts of generosity are suggested to Little Red Door, Wounded Warriors, Naval Aviation Museum or St. Christopher Parish. To honor Lady, say “hello” to a stranger!
