Obituary

Shaquille J.R. Edwards, lovingly known as Shaq, was a remarkable embodiment of joy, resilience, and love. Born on May 6, 1996, in Gary, Indiana, Shaq's laughter and witty sense of humor were infectious from a young age. He had the ability to light up every room he entered, turning ordinary moments into memories that would last a lifetime. His adventurous spirit led him to an array of experiences, from remodeling homes to speaking fluent Spanish. As we recall his life, we remember the words of Mark Twain: "The secret of getting ahead is getting started," and Shaq truly knew how to get started and make the most of every moment.

Shaq's courage was evident in all aspects of his life, from his professional endeavors to his personal relationships. He worked in construction, remodeling homes, and demonstrated an exceptional ability to build and create with his hands. This was not just a job for Shaq, but a passion that allowed him to showcase his creativity and dedication. Outside of work, Shaq loved to dance and spend time with his family, who were the center of his universe. His love for his children, Mia and Dominic, was unparalleled, and his devotion to his family was his guiding light. Shaq loved his family so much. His loyalty was unmatched to those he cared about.

Shaq is survived by his mother, Jacqueline Edwards-Chandler; his "Pops" Remmell Chandler; his father, Angelo Velez Sr; his sisters, Rachel Portis, Khryistina Wright, Zhane Edwards, Khelli Chandler, and Zha'Niyah Chandler; and his children, Mia and Dominic Edwards. He was preceded in death by his grandparents John and Isetta Edwards; sister Ebony L. Edwards; and brother Nathan Edwards. As we mourn his loss, we also celebrate the life of a man who was truly one-of-a-kind. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.

Shaq's celebration of life will be held at Stevens Mortuary, 5520 West 10th Street, Indianapolis, Indiana, 46224, on Friday, April 10, 2026. Visitation will begin at 11:00am EDT, followed by a funeral service at 1:00pm EDT.

In honor of Shaq's life, we encourage you to share your favorite memories of him and upload photos to his memorial page. His legacy is not just the life he led, but the lives he touched. Let us remember Shaq for the funny, witty, adventurous, and courageous man he was, and let his light continue to shine through our shared stories and memories.

I hate that this is where I gotta come just to talk to you now. So much has happened and I still catch myself wishing I could call you and tell you everything. I miss hearing your voice, I miss laughing with you, I miss just knowing my brother was here. I would give anything just to have one more regular ass day with you. And knowing you and Nathan both gone… man 💔💔 I really got two brothers I gotta miss for the rest of my life. I still don’t know how I’m supposed to be okay with that. I hope you with Nate somewhere cutting up, laughing at us and watching over me and Nomi. 🕊️ Y’all better be. I love you so much brother. I’m still here, still pushing, still trying.

I’ve been trying to find the words, but nothing really feels big enough to hold this kind of love or this kind of loss. From the moment I brought my nephew Shaq home from the hospital, I loved him like he was my own. That bond never changed—not one day. He grew into someone who always showed up for me, especially when I needed him most… and that’s something I will never forget. I keep thinking about his smile… that smile could light up a whole room. And those hugs—real hugs, the kind you don’t rush out of. The kind that made you feel safe, loved, and seen. And if I’m being real… I’m going to miss the little things the most. The laughs, the silly moments, the times I knew he was up to something just by the way he said “Auntie…”—and I’d pretend to ignore him because I already knew he was up to something. Those are the memories that keep replaying in my heart. Shaq, you were more than my nephew—you were my heart. And I’m going to miss you more than words could ever explain. Rest easy now, I will love you forever.

Shaq… I wish I could’ve stood up and said this in that room, but it was too much noise, too many people, and not enough space for what I really felt. So I’m saying it now. You wasn’t just my brother… you was a part of me. The way you said my name, the way we laughed, the way we connected when it was just us that’s the version of you I’m keeping. Not the pain. Not the struggle. Not the way it ended. I hate that you left like that. I hate that you was alone. I hate that I couldn’t change it. But I need you to hear me… I seen you. Even when other people didn’t. Even when life got heavy. Even when you got lost in it. I seen the part of you that had a chance. And I’m still that chance. So I’m not gone let this take me under. I’m not gone let this be the end of our story. I’m gone live. I’m gone grow. I’m gone protect what matter. And I’m gone carry you with me not as a loss… but as a reminder. I love you. Always. Love brother I know you and Nathan up there fighting already

Shaq. . . you were Sooooo special to me. So helpful, so dependable, always respectful, great sence of humor and a very proud daddy. The old saying, its not how many times you fall down BUT how many times you get back up.. fits your life. I know how many times you tried over and over again to make plans to better your life and better the life for your kids. If those plans didn't work out, you would come up w another plan. You never stopped trying. I remember the calls to ask me to pray for you, i remember the calls saying i'll see you at church 2morrow, i remember the call saying, i've been baptized. I love you Shaq, forever my Shaq Attack . I gave you that nick name because to know you was to love you. You attacked our hearts w your love and we couldn't help but to love you back. Your smile, your laugh, your joking,... I will always remember, you didn't die in vain. You Was Here and Forever Will Be In Our Hearts. You always said love you auntie, when you left or hung up the phone and i would say love you back. RIP NEPHEW LOVE YOU BACK..
