Obituary

JoAnn Banich, 62, passed away peacefully on February 21, 2023, after a brief battle with Metastatic Melanoma.  She was born on August 6, 1960, with loving parents Anna & Joseph Banich Sr who preceded her in death, as well as great-nephew John Patrick Banich.  JoAnn attended St. Michael & Cardinal Ritter High.  She was a former member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church & St. Michael the Archangel Church.  She was a member of the Slovenian National Home & a former KSKJ Bowling team member.  JoAnn was previously employed by Aetna & Sagamore Insurance Companies, and by Some Guys Pizza for the last 18 years.  She is survived by brother Joseph Banich Jr. (Jeannie), nephews Nicholas (Emilie) & Kevin (Audrey) Banich.  She was “Great-Auntie JoAnn” to Morgan, Garrett, & James Banich.  Visitation Monday, Feb. 27 at Stevens Mortuary, 5520 W 10th St, Indianapolis, IN 46224 from 4-7:30 p.m. with the Rosary at 7:30 p.m.  Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, Feb. 28, at St. Michael Catholic Church, 3310 W. 30th Street, Indianapolis, IN 46222 at 10:30 a.m. with burial to follow at St. Joseph Cemetery.  Because JoAnn dearly loved her dogs throughout the years, in lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to Indy Humane Society or to the Humane Society of Hamilton County

Joe and family: JoAnn was one of my first friends when I came to St Mike's in second grade. We played on the same kickball team together and later, in high school, we had a one season of coaching kickball together which made it clear coaching was not to be a profession. Later, all those summers at the Marian pool playing euchre, running to the Mc Donald's on 16th Street to grab sodas and the annual summer luau's are memories I will never forget and treasure always. She was one of the most kind, thoughtful and cheerful people I have ever known. I am so sorry for your loss. Beatrice

I met JoAnn at Holy Trinity, when both of us were regularly accompanying our parents to Mass. Her dad Joe and my dad Eddie were lifelong friends and members of the Holy Trinity Class of 1938, and our parents had taken several road trips together after they retired. JoAnn was a tremendous blessing to the Stergar family, because her attentiveness to her parents allowed four dear friends and other fellow classmates to see one another weekly. As her parents aged, she sent their Christmas cards for them in addition to sending her own, as she knew that tradition was important to them. She even made sure that her dad’s pockets were filled with candy on Sundays, and I benefited from that generosity many times! We talked a couple of times about the rich blessings that were being bestowed upon us as we served as our parents’ co-pilots, and we agreed that we wouldn’t trade that privilege for an easier path. Loved ones of JoAnn, the Stergar-Sheets family is saddened by the loss of a former Holy Trinity family member. I’m so incredibly sorry to hear of JoAnn’s passing. I worked with her at Sagamore & we hit it off famously. Years & life took us different directions. I remember her beautiful smile & she was always laughing. Just an all around kind & fun person. May she rest in peace. I pray for all of you mourning the loss of JoAnn. Such a beautiful tribute. I was very sad to hear about JoAnn's passing. We were friends growing up. She was always fun to be around. I enjoyed catching up with her when I was back in town for reunions or other gatherings. I loved her sense of humor and her beautiful smile. Rest in peace, JoAnn. My condolences to all her family and friends.
