Obituary

Bonnie “RED” Choate, 93, went peacefully to his final resting place on Sunday, April 30 th , 2023. He was born in Fountainhead, Tennessee on October 5, 1929, to James and Gertie Choate. Besides his parents, he was proceeded in death by his loving wife of 56 years, Dorothy Choate, three brothers, including his twin Lonnie, James “Bud”, and Eugene Choate, and his sister Margaret Moore.


Red lived in the Indianapolis area most of his life, and worked for Bridgeport Brass for 33 years. He enjoyed a long 39 years of retirement. During this time he went camping; travelling with his wife, and spent time with his grandsons. He loved gardening, working on his house, and was a huge race fan. Red loved to cook. He often baked zucchini bread to give out to his many friends and family. He was a hardworking man and will be missed greatly by everyone.


He is survived by one brother, Bill Choate (Callie), his two sons, Steve (Lori) Choate, and David (Linda) Choate. Also surviving are his grandsons Michael Choate, Christopher Choate, and Dustin Choate, and his two step-grandchildren Melissa DeBlieck and Eric DeBlieck, as well as his sweet; precious great-granddaughter, Olivia Choate.


The visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., Friday, May 5, 2023 at Stevens Mortuary, 5520 W 10th St, Indianapolis, IN 46224. A celebration of life will be held Saturday, May 6, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. A procession to the burial and a short service will be held at Lincoln Memory Gardens in Whitestown, Indiana.


The family would like to give special thanks to the Springs of Mooresville and IU Health Hospice for taking care of Red in his final days.

I have heard many wonderful stories of my son-in-law’s wonderful Papaw over the years. How he took Mike camping and fishing, always a loving Grandpa. I knew what a sweet man he was first hand when I saw the cake he baked and decorated for little Olivia’s 1st birthday,and his obvious delight and love. . May perpetual light shine upon him, grace and peace to all he leaves behind.

Words can't describe how much I feel for the boys and your family. Your dad was an amazing person who loved you more than anything. You have friends and family that care about you and that you can share your pain with. Keeping you and your family in my mind and heart during this difficult time.

I am sorry to hear of the passing of Bonnie! I want you to know my family appreciated Bonnie for befriending our mom Betty Need at the Harrison and helping her in many ways. He was a great friend to her. Sorry for your loss!

Dear Stevie and Davey, I just saw that Fuzzy passed away back in April. What a nice video tribute for him! As you know, his mom Gertie and my grandma, Mabel, were sisters. Fuzzy and my mom, Pat, were cousins. I remember such fun visits—not frequent enough. I remember your dad by his exuberance for life, his infectious grin and laugh, his motorcycle, and of course his love for your mom. Watching the video, I am reminded of his flower gardening, my mom’s passion as well. You may find it comical that years ago, I adopted a video game name: Gertie. It stuck and has become my husband’s nickname for me. Skip and I still live in Colorado, but we visit my mom and stepdad in Mooresville several times a year.
