Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Patrick Aloysius Grant, 88, on October 31, 2023. He was born in Glasgow, Scotland on November 6, 1934, to Hugh and Isabella Grant (nee Doherty) of Derry, Northern Ireland. He passed away peacefully at his home in Indianapolis surrounded by loved ones.

Patrick was raised in both Glasgow and Derry. He served in the British Navy from 1952 - 1955, and then apprenticed as a sheet metal worker. In February of 1962, he married Evelyn Weir, and the couple immigrated to the United States with their two children in 1976. 

Patrick started singing professionally at the age of three on BBC Radio. He studied voice under various prestigious tutors and developed into a beautiful Irish Tenor. He entertained steadily throughout his life, and sang the US and Canadian national anthems for the World Hockey Association and Central Hockey League from 1977 until 1987. Following that, he was a shoo-in for a role singing the National Anthem in the 1988 movie Eight Men Out about the Chicago Black Sox scandal during the 1919 World Series. For over 40 years, Patrick was a fixture in the Indy Irish Community, and more recently was an adopted son of the Indianapolis Liederkranz Men's Choir.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Evelyn, children Geraldine (Mark) Neita, Martin (Lolin) Grant, grandchildren Lyndsey Neita (Bryce Melton), Taylor Neita, Aidan Grant, Sarah Grant (Yamil Diaz), Samantha Nagy, great-grandchildren Delia, Islay, and Olivia Melton, as well as niece Elizabeth (Ian) MacLeod and other beloved in-laws and nieces and nephews.

 

Patrick will make one final trip to Scotland to be buried in his homeland. His beautiful voice, gentle heart, and kind demeanor will be missed by all who knew him.

 

The family would like to express their gratitude for the outpouring of love and support during this difficult time. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Pat was my mother’s baby brother, and when he came to America, it completed the circle of the Grant clan in Indianapolis. Those years in memory are precious. With my mother’s passing, we all went our separate ways. Prayers and love to Evelyn, Martin and Geraldine. Memories are left us, and a time that will be with us forever remains. God bless my mother, Pat and all the Grants past and present.

Jerry and I just watched the beautiful video tribute to Pat. Inspiring to hear his beautiful voice and to see photos of a young Pat and Evelyn and kids. Pat always sang Molly Malone for our daughter, Molly Kathleen, at the Ace on St. Patrick’s Day.
