Florence Miskowiec

July 03, 1933 - April 21, 2024

Obituary

Florence Miskowiec, 90, of Speedway, Indiana passed away on April 21, 2024.  Florence was born in Indianapolis in July of 1933 to parents Christ and Turpa Kazacoff, both of whom migrated, with their families, to the US from the village of Zelniche in what is today Macedonia to begin a better life in the United States.  Florence spoke the Macedonian language as a child and up to the day she passed.  She enjoyed Macedonian food and cultural activities her entire life.

After graduating from Washington High School in 1951, Florence married the love of her life, Raymond, in 1952 and they were married for 44 years.  She always had a lifelong passion for music and loved singing and playing the piano. She also enjoyed watching old films, playing dominos and was very skilled and generous in the kitchen.  But her favorite joy in life was spending time with family and friends. Florence was a devoted matriarch who loved her family unconditionally with dedication and generosity.  A member of St Stephens Bulgarian Eastern Orthodox Church, Florence was involved in the Sisterhood.  Anytime she met someone, she would remember an old song and sing for them.  She had an irreverent sense of humor inflected with a flair for sarcasm and truth telling.

Florence is survived by her daughter Patricia (Bill) Stokes, sons Richard Miskowiec, Timothy Miskowiec, and daughter-in-law Leslie Miskowiec:  7 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild.  Preceded in death: parents Turpa and Christ Kazacoff, her husband Raymond, her son Tom, sister Mary Klemen and brother Louis Kazacoff.

The family of Florence will receive friends on Monday, April 29, 2024, from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM at St. Stephen Bulgarian Eastern Orthodox Church 1435 Medford Ave Indianapolis, IN 46222 followed by a prayer service at 7:00 PM. A funeral service will also be held at St. Stephen at 11:00 AM, Tuesday, April 30, 2024, with visitation from 10:00 AM until time of service. Interment to follow in Crown Hill Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in her name may be directed to St Stephen Bulgarian Eastern Orthodox Church 1435 Medford Ave, Indianapolis, IN 46222.

From 1975-1982, I shared the south backyard fence with Florence. Wonderful lady. She gave me some of the hottest peppers I've ever eaten! I pray for God's peace and comfort over her family.

Mom's last week with us: November 2023 momma was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer & was given maybe 6 months to live. She lived life to the fullest until April 2024. Late March mom fell and cracked her femur right before going to church to receive communion. The surgery went very well, and she did very good through rehab. Momma is a very strong person! Tuesday April 9th, 2024, her great great grandson Remington Clay was born 5 lbs. 4oz (5 generations). He was not due till April 23rd. Wed morning April 10th, mom went to Hendricks Cnty ER for a high temp. The hospital kept her and during routine tests found her cancer had spread to her liver and lungs. The next day, Thursday April 11th while visiting mom in the hospital, she told Tammy and I she wanted to live long enough to attend our annual race day party and she wanted to die at home. For months we had thought about hospice, but who do we choose? Friday a friend suggested 'Anew' and I phoned them. When they heard, we were going to have a race party early, they immediately wanted to help. Saturday mom came home from the hospital and Sunday was her party. ‘Anew’ hospice worked alongside with CEO Doug Boles arranged a pace car and vintage car in the driveway. The WTHR (13), Fox news, neighbors, family, friends, Sandi Patty, her husband Don, Sandi's dad Poppa, CEO of Indy 500 Doug Boles, and Dave the king Wilson, and Marion Cnty Sheriff's honor guard were all at mom's home to celebrate her party. This day was the best day of her last week. She could see out the window and loved being near her manger scene. Her family was with her 24/7. Wednesday, I asked what sounds good to eat, and she said meatballs. Within 10 minutes my phone rang, and mom’s nephew Teddy said, 'I'm almost to your house with meatballs'. God hears our every prayer! Each day she declined, and on Thursday evening some of the Kazacoff’s came to visit. She was very weak but awake and talked and conversed with the family and handed out money to the children (our custom). After that visit momma never ate or drank again. Her nurse Leigh shared with me how the book 'Dark Clouds Deep Mercy' is so good. Saturday evening Bill was going to order it through Amazon Prime and couldn't get in. Sunday morning mom’s nurse Leigh brings me the book.... again, only God! Mom passed at 3:35 pm Sunday surrounded by family. The bright spot of this difficult week was the Lord gave us Remington and we were able to get the 5-generation picture as mom held Remi. She was ready to see Jesus and her family who went before her. On behalf of my sweet mother, words can never express the overwhelming support, compassion, and care during these trying days. My family and I will always remember 'Anew Hospice' expression of love. Each one of them was an instrumental part in helping us celebrate momma's last week of life.
