Obituary
Thomas J. Whitsett
September 22, 1945 – September 2, 2026
Thomas J. Whitsett, 80, of Avon, Indiana, passed away on September 2, 2026, surrounded by the love of the family he cherished so deeply.
Tom was born September 22, 1945, in Indianapolis to Charles and Mildred (Baar) Whitsett. He grew up attending St. Anthony's grade school and The Latin School, before heading to St. Mary's College in Kentucky, where he studied from 1963 to 1967. He carried that Catholic education forward into his own career, teaching elementary school at St. Michael's Catholic School in Indianapolis from 1967 to 1974 — shaping young minds during the early years of his adult life. He later moved into trucking, a career that would take him all the way through to his retirement in 2005. Over the years, he made his home in Indianapolis, Brownsburg, and Avon, Indiana.
But it was retirement that gave Tom his favorite job of all: grandfather. He delighted in spending time with his grandchildren, often stepping in to babysit and soak up every moment he could with them. Family was the center of his world, and he made sure everyone around him knew it.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Mildred (Baar) Whitsett; and his siblings, Charles Whitsett, Mary Whitsett, Angela Frost, and David Whitsett.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Brenda (Adams) Whitsett; his daughters, Stacy (Raymond) Nahlen, Kelly (Doug) Weaver, and Lori (Dylan) Beebe; his grandchildren, Mary, Ann, and Sara Nahlen, Alena, Brynn, and Hadley Weaver, and Jordan Beebe; and his siblings, Sr. Therese Whitsett, S.P., Martha (John) Kremer, Christine (Chuck) Stewart, and Tim Whitsett.
A visitation will be held Wednesday, September 9, at St. Christopher Catholic Church from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., followed by a funeral service at 11:00 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Tom's memory.
