Dolores Mick

Dolores Amelia Mick, 92, passed away May 5, 2010. Born Dolores Steele in Chicago on August 25, 1917, she was the oldest of five siblings, with two sisters and two brothers, all deceased. During World War II, Dolores (also known as Dolly) was a volunteer health care worker. She would also write letters to the troops overseas, hoping to encourage and lift their spirits. During this time, she began a correspondence with a Southern Indiana farm boy who was stationed in the Pacific. The letters turned into a romance, and after the war, Dolores Steele and John Mick were married. The couple settled in Indianapolis, the midpoint between their respective hometowns. John died in 1980; August 10th of this year would have been John and Dolores' 64th wedding anniversary. Dolores worked locally at Howard Sams Publishing and then spent 26 years as an administrative assistant at Wishard Memorial Hospital. She was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church and for many years was the President of the Altar Society at Assumption Catholic Church until the parish closed. Dolores is survived by her children, John Mick, Michael Mick, William Mick and Amelia Titsworth, as well as 14 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews and godchildren, and more friends than can be counted. Calling will be held at Stevens Mortuary & Family Center on Friday, May 7 from 4 pm to 7:30 pm, with the praying of the Rosary at 7:30 pm. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Anthony Catholic Church on Saturday, May 8 at 9:00 am. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Anthony Catholic Church and Fatima Retreat House.
