Obituary
Larry Hurt 57, of Indianapolis, passed away on July 1, 2010. He was born on October 11, 1952 to George and Helen Hurt. Larry graduated from Purdue University with a Bachelors degree in Art Education. He went on to earn his Masters degree in Education from Butler University and he was near completion of a Doctoral degree in New Literacies from Purdue University. Larry worked at Ben Davis High School for 35 years. He was chairman of the Ben Davis Art Department. Larry served on numerous art organization boards and advisory councils including: Clowes Memorial Hall, Indianapolis Museum of Art, Dance Kaleidoscope, Indiana Repertory Theatre, Very Special Arts of Indiana, Indianapolis Art Center and Arts Indiana Magazine. Larry was the founding director of the Wayne Township Arts Alive Festival. Larry was a lifelong pianist and was Music Director and director of the choir for 35 years at St. Christopher Church in Speedway, IN. He loved to travel and was a talented painter and potter. Larry was the 1999 Indiana State Teacher of the Year; a Disney American Teacher Award Honoree; recipient of the Indiana Governors' Arts Award; was the only teacher in Wayne Township to receive the Senior's Choice Award every year for 25 years; was an inductee in the Ben Davis Alumni Hall of Fame; was honored as a Sagamore of the Wabash; was Indiana Art Educator of the Year in 1999; and in 2001, was the only teacher to speak at the White House for Hilary Clinton's conference on teenagers. Larry is survived by his partner for over 32 years, Tom McTamney; his parents; sisters, Leslie White (David), Gayle Pulliam (Bill) and Janet Kincaid (Brian); 3 nieces; 5 nephews; 1 great niece and 1 great nephew. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 6 at St. Christopher Catholic Church, 5301 W 16th St, Speedway from 4-8:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, July 7, 2010 at 11:00 am with one hour calling prior of service at St. Christopher Catholic Church. Entombment will be at Washington Park North Cemetery. Contributions can be made to St. Meinrad Seminary. Arrangements were entrusted to Stevens Mortuary & Family Center, www.stevensmortuary.net

I had the privledge of working with Larry when he was a student teacher and then an aide at South Wayne Jr. High in the early 70's. What a great guy....outgoing, kind, generous, fun to be around! I pray that his family have the peace of God in their loss. We shall all miss him....Linda Dudine

Know that you are in my prayers and thoughts as you suffer the loss of Larry. I will always remember with fondness the times I played for the choir at St. Chris under the direction of Larry and the time we went to the NPM convention in Detroit in '81.

Larry was a terrific and loyal friend. Our community is diminished substantially by this loss. The Indianapolis Symphonic Choir will always remember his gracious generosity when we had the good fortune to sing at Saint Christopher's.
