Obituary

On Tuesday, December 17th, 2024, Charlotte Rae Hughes Wright passed away peacefully after a lengthy battle with cancer. 

Charlotte was born May 13th, 1939, at home in Mahoning County, Youngstown, Ohio. She was the fourth child born to Frederick Tennery Hughes and Edith Caroline Davis Hughes. Her siblings are beloved Brothers Jack Fred (deceased) David Warren (deceased) and George Bryan (deceased) and her beloved sister Margaret Alice Hughes Samuels. She is survived by her four children, Becky Ellwood(John), Amy Crowe(Larry), Randall Wright(Sheila), and Fred Wright(Maria). She was especially in love with her 15 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren. 

Charlotte's life was rich. She was a dedicated mother, loving wife, devoted friend, talented writer, and editor. Her pride in her family history was evident, and she embraced her roles as a daughter, sister, cousin, neighbor, and friend with grace and warmth.

An avid reader, Charlotte devoured thousands of books, wrote poetry, prose, and fiction, and appreciated the beauty of art. She was a grand storyteller and conversationalist. She was resilient and fiercely independent. She had an adventurous spirit, and boundless empathy.  Her homes were havens for strays, her kitchens served as local emergency centers, and her friendships were steadfast and enduring. Her spirituality guided her throughout her life and brought her comfort in her final days.

Though her heart was deeply touched by life's challenges, she also found beauty and emotion in the smallest of moments, whether it was an injured butterfly, a beautiful sonnet, or a priceless Picasso. Charlotte's talents extended to the kitchen and the garden, where her creations were nothing short of extraordinary.

She was a fierce advocate for women's rights, a champion for the underprivileged, and a voice in spirited political debates. Her passion for justice and equality was an enduring hallmark of her character.

A celebration of Charlotte's remarkable life will be held at Hampton Inn Avon 193 Angelina Way Avon, Indiana 46123 on Saturday, January 4, 2025 from 1:00 PM until 4:00 PM with the Eulogy at 2:30 PM. 

Charlotte's memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew her, as her impact on this world was immeasurable, and her love, unending.

My Grammie was always a traveler, and she would often take me with her. One time we were on our way to Michigan to see her sister, and she had bought me some slime. Somehow, I had slime hanging from the rearview mirror and it was dripping down and we were laughing so hard that she missed her exit. Another time we stopped to get something to eat at a Wendy’s and it was dark and she put on some lipstick before we went in. Once we got inside, I noticed that her lipstick was actually under eye concealer and we laughed so hard we could barely order our food . She used to take me to New York every summer to visit my Uncle Fred and Aunt Maria and they would take us into the city and we would have pizza and see all the sites and go to the beach. She traveled to Spain for Fred and Maria’s wedding and she always talked about wanting to take me with her to visit one day. I have so many fond memories of my Grammie growing up but the best one ever is that no matter where she lived or no matter what bed she had she always had one of those beds that I would crawl into as a child or as an adult and fall right asleep. I will always remember Charlotte’s kindness to me. She always treated me as family and not the obnoxious neighbor that I’m sure I was at times. She took me in for a few months before I left for New Mexico and never made me feel like an intruder. Even though she could be a formidable woman, I will always remember her kindness, her distinctive laugh and the love she had for her family. I know she will be missed by many and heart goes out to you.
