Damita Wash

Damita LaJoyce Wash was born April 20, 1961 in Evansville, IN. The only child of Bonita Norman and Bill Black. She was preceded in death by her father Bill Black. Damita accepted Christ at age 4 and joined Nazarene Baptist Church, Evansville IN. She graduated from Harrison High School. Damita began working for the U.S. Postal Service in March 1986 and relocated with the USPS to Indianapolis IN in 1989. Damita started as a clerk, but later worked many years as a supervisor in the Training department. She worked for the USPS for 30 years, retiring June 2016 as a Maintenance Supervisor. Damita joined Eastern Star Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Jeffery Johnson where she grew in the knowledge of the Lord. While attending Eastern Star she was a member of the Adult Sunday School class at the Northwest location. She served on the Usher Board and was active in various church auxiliaries. Damita opened her home to small group bible studies, her Sunday School class members and her friends. Damita was first diagnosed with Stage 4 Breast cancer in the winter of 1998. She continued to battle for 18 years through multiple rounds of breast and ovarian cancer. You never heard Damita complain, but you could always count on that Damita smile. Her smile was contagious, always inviting, always encouraging and a true example of her courage, her strength and her faith. It in the midst of her own battles with cancer Damita became an active Board Member of the Pink Ribbon Connection; a participant in the Indiana group of Susan G Komen and continually gave back to the Breast Cancer community within Central Indiana. Her love of exercise and determination to lead a healthy lifestyle led her to become an aerobics instructor, however, after her initial diagnoses she stopped teaching aerobics and became a Zumba student instead. This was a true testament to her commitment to healthy living and she shared her enthusiasm with her friends and family who affectionately called her “the Drill Sergeant”. Damita was a prayer warrior whose love for everyone was rooted in her faith. She listened, shared her advice and didn't judge. She was a loving mother, grandmother, “second mother” and sister to many. She will be sorely missed by all who knew her. To know Damita was to love her and the kind wishes that she would always have for you. Damita was blessed with three children: Jamin Eugene Bradley, Angela Yvonne Norman and James William Wash. She would say that the best part of her life was the time she spent with her children whom she loved dearly. She provided for her children and required them to get a good education. Her other joy was her grandson, Jordan DeAndre Bradley whom she loved unconditionally. Damita peacefully entered her eternal rest on Tuesday, August 25th in Scottsdale, AZ where she traveled to spend her last days with her children, all the while maintaining her hope, her trust and her steadfast faith in God. Damita leaves to cherish her memory: her mother Bonita Norman, her eldest son, Jamin Bradley; her daughter Angela Norman, both of Phoenix, AZ; her youngest son, James Wash, of Lexington, KY, her grandson, Jordan Bradley, of Milan, IN, and a host of aunts, uncles, family, many friends and co-workers.
