Walter McAtee

Walter B. McAtee, 87, passed away on October 12, 2016 to be with God in Heaven. Walter was born on April 24, 1929 to William and Teresa McAtee. Walter was a U.S. Army veteran and retired from Allison Transmission-GM in 1985. He was a hard worker and during those 35 years that he worked at Allison he often worked secondary jobs to support his family. After Walter retired, he went to work for I.M.S. (Indianapolis Motor Speedway) Productions in the Hospitality business. He was able to work with his son, Buddy and enjoy one of the loves of his life…racing! Walter was an avid Indy Car fan. He attended numerous Indy 500's and was able to travel and enjoy the sport for more than 10 years while employed by the I.M.S. He was a member of St. Michael and St. Malachy Catholic Churches. He was married in 1948 to the love of his life, Sharon D. Showalter and together they had five wonderful children. Walter was preceded in death by his parents, several brothers and a sister. He was also preceded in death by his loving wife, Sharon and son, Bernard Clark “Buddy” McAtee and great grandson, Thomas. Walter is survived by his daughters, Teri (Gene) Smith, Susan McAtee, Drs. Elaine (Dave) Cox; son, Andrew (Melissa) McAtee; sister, Frances Atwood; eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the CLIMB Fund for Indiana Parkinson's Foundation in Walter's name. The family would like to thank Westside Garden Plaza for their wonderful care of our father. Visitation will be held on Monday, October 17, 2016 from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Stevens Mortuary 5520 W. 10th St. Indpls, IN. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 on AM Tuesday, October 18, 2016 at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church 3354 W. 30th St. Indpls. Interment to follow in Washington Park North.
