Grace Elizabeth Kleinsteiber DuMond, age 93, of Indianapolis, passed away on October 11, 2018.  A celebration of life service will be held Wednesday, October 17, at Chapel Hill United Methodist Church, 963 N. Girls School Road, Indianapolis, at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Karen DeVaisher and Rev. Dave Buckner officiating.  Visitation will be held at Stevens Mortuary, 5520 West 10th St., Indianapolis, from 4:30 pm to 7:30 pm on October 16, and again from 10:00 am to 11:00 on October 17, preceding the celebration of life service at the church.

Grace was born in Canton, Illinois to John and Elizabeth (Stanton) Kleinsteiber on May 26, 1925.  She graduated from Canton High School in 1943 (as salutatorian) and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree from Illinois Wesleyan College, majoring in chemistry and graduating at the top of her class. In 1946 she married her high school sweet heart, Charles DuMond, with whom she bore three children.  For over 40 years, Grace helped her husband, an ordained minister, serve congregations of the Church of the Brethren and the United Methodist Church (including Chapel Hill United Methodist Church).  Grace was an accomplished pianist and organist, as well as singer, and she often uplifted her family, friends and fellow parishioners with music.

In 1964-65, Grace was among the first women to attend Notre Dame University in the Master of Arts in Teaching program.  Following this training, she took up substitute teaching.  She also taught piano lessons for many years.

Grace loved her family and is survived by her children, David DuMond (Denise Safford), Bill DuMond (Jane), and Elizabeth Steele (Jeff), by her grandchildren, James DuMond (Karin), Nathan DuMond (Samantha), Jeremy DuMond (Karen), Ethan Steele (Mary-Jeanette), and Leah Steele, by her great-grandchildren, Evan and Rowan DuMond, Robbie and Megan Egolf, and Chase, Corinne and Marin DuMond, by her sister, Lois Holmes, and by nieces and nephews, Jessie Holmes, John Kleinsteiber, Esther Mae (Doug) Plodowski, John (Kathy) Zimmerman, Edith (Tom) Hamilton, Mary (Dennis) Johnson, Connie (Roger) Tuter, and Nancy (Wayne) Cline,  She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of nearly 66 years, Charles, her brother, John Kleinsteiber, and her granddaughter, Jennifer DuMond Egolf.

Memorial donations may be made to the Humane Society of Indianapolis, the Salvation Army of Indianapolis, or Chapel Hill United Methodist Church.  The family wishes to extend their deep gratitude to her caregivers over the last several years.

Hello, I am a Great Grand-Niece to Grace. My Grandmother, Gladys Opal (DuMond) was her sister in law. Todd & I just wanted to let you all know that you are all in our prayers. Unfortunately we will not be able to attend the funeral. Mom, Dad and I believe Kathy Jo will be attending. Just wanted to send you a note acknowledging Aunt Grace's passing into her Lord & Savior's loving arms. Love to all of you in your time of grief. In Christ Jesus Name, Heidi (Plodowski) & Todd Weldy

Grace was truly an angel of God. Her laugh could light-up a room. She truly lived a Christian life and it showed in everything she did. She was a wonderful role model to me.

Well done, good and faithful servant. It has been years since I have heard your name but recall it fondly. We were so blessed to be pastor's wives and get to know so many wonderful people in our husband's churches over the years.
