Ralph R. Hobbs

 

Ralph Hobbs, age 89, Speedway, Indiana passed away on Thursday, May 9, 2019 after a brief illness.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, May 20, 2019 at 1 PM at St. Christopher Catholic Church, 5301 W. 16th Street with visitation beginning at 11 AM. A rosary will be prayed at 12:30 PM.  Rev. Paul Shikany will offer the Mass of Celebration. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery.   

 

Ralph was born on March 29, 1930 in Indianapolis.  He graduated from Manual High School in June, 1947.  He received an Honorable Discharge from the United States Army Air force on October 21, 1949.  He was a carpenter by trade and worked for IUPUI in Indianapolis for 24 years retiring in April 1992. 

 

Ralph was married to Mary Joan "Jo" Hobbs on February 3, 1951.  Jo preceded him in death on August 25, 1990 after 39 years of a wonderful marriage.  They had one son Jeffery who died August 26, 2006.  Ralph has one grandson David Hobbs. 

 

Ralph was an active parishioner of St. Christopher Catholic Church since 1965. Ralph was a member of the Knights of Columbus Holy Family Council having become a Brother Knight in May 1956.  He was Grand Knight in the fiscal year 1964-65.  Ralph was also a dedicated volunteer for 38 years at the Richard Roudebush VA Medical Center assisting taking patients to Sunday Mass.  Ralph was also a long-time member of Speedway American Legion Post 500.

 

His activities included carpentry, bowling, golf, and playing euchre.

 

Memorial contributions may be made either to St. Christopher Catholic Church, 5301 W. 16th Street, Indianapolis, IN 46224 and/or to Gibault Home, 6301 S. US Highway 41, Terre Haute, IN 47802.

Ralph was a wonderful man and my father Merle Cassidy of the Knights of Columbus was happy to have him as a friend they played Euchre together and on my father's last birthday when he was 98 he and his friend John and Lou Allbright they came to my Dad's apartment and played played Euchre with him and brought him a birthday cake my dad died 2 months later that day made my dad very happy

Ralph Hobbs was a great guy, I worked with him at IUPUI as a carpenter for several years until he retired. My wife and I have kept in touch with him over the years. I remember what a great story teller he was and what a great sense of humor he had. I know he was an avid bowler, golfer and euchre player. He was also a devoted St. Christopher parishioner. Ralph was a just like a father. He love playing cards and bowling with Lou Albrecht, Going out for Breakfast with the guys from the K of C. Six of you guys called yourself the liars group. He loved his IU basketball. He would even go over to the Speedway High School and watch them play basketball. You was always there to do the rosary for the ones that gone before us from the K of C. You picked you dad up and took him to the meetings, to play cards, breakfast. You died almost to the day that my dad Lou Albrecht died May 22 2018. Ralph I am going to miss giving you a kiss on the forehead. You are both together playing cards, bowling, golfing,

I didn't know this soul very long but while I was a brief part of his journey, he treated me with kindness and respect, which meant a lot to me. I am saddened to know of his passing. Yet, I know he is with his beloved wife and his son. May they REST IN PEACE. My heartfelt condolences to his grandson David and the entire family. GOD Be With You All.
