Obituary

Indianapolis – Victor Ray Norris, aka, “Ray”, aka “Smiley”, 82, passed away Friday, August 2, 2019 at home following an extended illness.

 

He leaves his wife of 30 years, Janet Norris, his daughters, Denise Norris Coleman and Diane Norris, his step- daughter, Dena Shively, three grandchildren and one great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his son, Daniel Norris, and grandson, Matthew Norris.

 

Born in 1937 to the late Oscar and Edith Norris, in Indianapolis, their youngest child, proved to be quite spirited. He was a graduate of Southport High School.  Ray served 8 years in the Naval reserves and was a proud member of the IBEW Local 481 for 63 years. Known exclusively as “Smiley” to many friends and co-workers because of his infectious smile and good nature.

 

Ray was a member of the Speedway Christian Church. He loved to travel, and he and his wife spent a total of 60 days on cruise ships, seeing many great sights and enjoying life. Along with travel, Ray was very passionate about his sports teams. The Colts, Pacers, and the Chicago Cubs, to name a few. He also loved Nascar and attended many races.  

 

Ray enjoyed time with family and friends and loved to have fun. He loved to play cards and enjoyed an occasional Bud Light. He will be deeply missed by so many.

 

Services will be held at

Steven's Mortuary

5520 W. 10th Street

Indianapolis, IN 46224

 

Friday August 9th from 11am to 1pm, funeral immediately following

First I would like to say my condolences to the family. Second I would like to say that "Smiley" Norris was one person in my life that I will never forget. He not only made work fun but quit enjoyable! We were working on the Manual HS remodel in the 80's for Ling Oliver. There was not a day that went by that he didn't have me in stitches!...……..and yes we got a lot of work done because things went fast! A time in my life that I will NEVER forget! Rest in peace dear friend I know I'll miss you and I'm sure others will too. Mark Manley LU #481

My deepest sympathy to the family,and friends of Smiley. I met Smiley in 1973 as a first year apprentice,working at the Allison plant in Speedway.I was a typical irresponsible 19 year old,coming in late,or not showing up for work at all.Smiley pulled me aside and told me I would never make it in the trade if I kept doing this.I remembered that the rest of my time in the local,and had the pleasure of working on many jobs with Smiley over my 45 years in the trade.He was a great man.and friend.Rest in peace Brother Ray.

Janet, Kyle and I were so sorry to hear about Sonny and wish we could be with you and the family. My fondest memory of him was on the day Rex and I were married. He told me that if Rex ever upset me, I just had to let him know, but he teased me that when he got to know me, he changed his mind. I know he'll be missed by many people.
