I remember the first time I met my cousin Jamie. I was about 8 years old and visiting Virginia from my home in California for the first time. As a child, showing up somewhere completely new, all the way across the country for the first time — it was a little scary — I didn’t know what to expect.
My parents tried to introduced me to Jamie… but they were late to the party. Before I even realized what they were saying, there was Jamie — waving to me with a big grin on his face.
Jamie was exciting, welcoming and all around fun to be around. Even though I was his cousin that he had never met (who was about 16 years younger than him) he made me feel welcome and showed me that I was family before I even knew that he was my family. I can only imagine that’s what made him such a great dad.
I know I am loved by family, and by friends that I haven’t even met yet because of Jamie. Jamie was a family man before everything else. I love you Jamie, and I’ll do everything I can to do for others what you did for me.
Love,
Your cousin and friend,
John Peate
