Joseph Patrick Sweeney, 26, of Chicago, Illinois, passed away from natural causes on December 9, 2020. Joseph was born August 2, 1994 in Indianapolis. He is survived by his parents, Patrick and Alice Sweeney, brothers Daniel and Collin, and many aunts, uncles and cousins. Joseph attended St. Christopher Catholic School in Speedway and was a 2013 graduate of Cardinal Ritter High School. Joseph was a 4-year member of the football team at Cardinal Ritter. He was Academic All State, on the Colts Academic All-Star team, and a recipient of the Indiana Football Foundation Scholar Athlete award. His senior year he was a member of the state runner-up football team and was the recipient of the Phil N. Eskew Mental Attitude Award for Class 2A Football. Joseph was class salutatorian, a National Merit finalist, and a member of the 2011 Championship Brain Game team as well as the 2012 runner up Brain Game team. He was named an Indiana Academic All Star in 2013. Joseph was also a 10-year member of Marion County 4-H. He was the State and National 4-H Electric Challenge winner in 2010, and a 4-year member of the State 4-H Band. Joseph was a 2017 graduate with distinction from Purdue University in Electrical and Computer Engineering. At Purdue he was a member of Tau Beta Pi, the Purdue Concert Band and was a Presidential Scholar. Joseph was a software engineer for Google in Chicago. Prior to that he was a software engineer at Milliman in Indianapolis. During his time at Purdue, he interned at Bloomberg LP in New York, and Texas Instruments in Santa Clara, CA and Dallas. Due to recent Covid-19 restrictions, a private Mass of Christian Burial will be held for the family and close personal friends on Thursday, December 17 at 11 am. The family invites you to join them via a livestream from St. Christopher Catholic Church, 5301 W. 16th Street, Speedway, Indiana. I remember Joseph came to bible study once a week at Saint Christopher during his lunch and recess. He was so faith filled even as a young boy. I know God welcomed his good and faithful servant home with open arms. Alice, Pat and family, we are so sorry. You will all be in our prayers for some time.

Joseph may have been a quiet individual, but he was such a remarkable young man. He was so bright and talented, and he was involved in so much. He will be greatly missed. To his family, I am so sorry for your loss. May God give you the strength you need during this time. He will be missed by us all.

Joseph and I went all through grade school and high school in the same class. He and I were never that close, but we played football together throughout our years. He was an incredible teammate, student, and person. I loved every play call that I was able to lineup next to him so I could ask him my blocking assignment. Most of the time I didn't know and knew he would point me in the right direction. I'll never forget looking over and seeing Joe win the Phil N. Eskew mental attitude award after losing in the state championship our senior year. I was so happy for him as nobody else deserved that award more than he did. Alice, Pat, Daniel, Colin, and all family, I am incredibly sorry for your loss. You are all in the Hagan family's prayers.

I'll always remember Joseph as the incredibly gifted person that he was, as well as being someone who never had something bad to say about anyone. Joseph really lead by example when it came to being kind and compassionate.
I remember getting to spend time with Joseph over the summer playing Dungeons & Dragons, and even in a fantasy based game Joseph strove to be a kind and upstanding person - it's just who he was.
Joseph will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Condolences to the Sweeney family and all of his loved ones.

Joseph was fun to be around when he played football at Ritter and very proud of him when he won the mental attitude award. Rest in peace Joseph you will be missed I was happy to be your stat guy

I’ll never forget the time in practice when he messed up a block, this was like during 2 a days, and coach had him walk through it to come block me at Corner. He was about two steps away from me when I realize he wasn’t slowing down and I had to get out of dodge before he steam rolled me. He always put out 100%
