Julia Layden Baker, age 100, of Indianapolis passed away on Wednesday, April 28, 2021. She was born in Indianapolis to Ella and George Layden on August 1, 1920. Julia worked at RCA. After marrying, she cared for her family and aging parents. She enjoyed gardening, boating and camping. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Baker and her parents. Julia is survived by her children, Mark (Robert Wilson) Baker and Patricia (Jeffrey) Sloan; and her grandchild, Samuel Sloan. Julia's strong spirit, sense of humor, and smile will be missed. Julia came to Healthplex for dancercise, very faithfully, until a few years ago. Her ability to participate so fully was an inspiration for so, so many of us. (Sure wish I could do what she could do, and I'm a lot younger than she was!) We do miss how she lit up our class every time she came in. We were very blessed.

Julia was one of the sweetest ladies I knew and quite a card shark! First met her and played Yahtzee at her home on Tibbs Ave. for a New Year’s Eve. Spent Christmas Day with her Dec 1993 and many times with Mark and Patty as well. Julia, you will be dearly missed!

Julia was truly an unforgettable lady! As a member of the exercise class we shared, Julia inspired many of us who admired her pluck, pleasant personality, and upbeat attitude. She will be remembered by all who were lucky enough to have met and enjoyed her.

Julia was one of the early members of the Fit/50 exercise group when I originally started it in 1994 at the YWCA. The entire Fit/50 group moved to Healthplex in 2000 where Julia remained a "regular" class member up until 5 or 6 years ago. I stress "regular" because no matter how inclement the weather, Julia would show up for class. She would pick up those hand weights, she would get down on the mat for floorwork. At 90+ years. Never any excuses. If anyone was going to cross the 100 years line, we knew it was going to be Julia. For a petite lady, she set the bar high for all of us, myself included. Julia possessed an understated, dry sense of humor and made more than a few of us wish we had lived next door to her.
