1923

Stevens Mortuary has proudly served the west side of Indianapolis since 1923, building a lasting legacy of compassion, trust, and dedicated service to the community. Founded by Mr. and Mrs. Charles V. Stevens, both licensed funeral directors, the mortuary first opened its doors at 2831 W. 10th Street. From the very beginning, their vision was rooted in providing dignified, respectful care while supporting families during life’s most difficult moments.

1940

In 1940, Joseph F. Stevens, Sr graduated from the Indiana Embalmers School, and received his Funeral Director's License. Taking over Stevens Mortuary in 1949, he built the new mortuary on the west-side of Indianapolis, on 16th Street. From 1950 to 1953 he also was a Professor at the Indiana Mortuary School, where he taught Chemistry and Embalming. He remained on staff as an advisor for many years.

As the community grew, so did Stevens Mortuary. In 1948, the funeral home relocated to its second location at 3136 W. 16th Street. This new facility was opened and operated by Joseph F. Stevens, Sr., who carried forward the family’s commitment to excellence and personalized service. Under his leadership, the mortuary continued to strengthen its reputation as a trusted and compassionate presence in the Indianapolis community.

1974

In 1974, Joseph F. Stevens, Jr. became a licensed funeral director and embalmer, joining his father in the family business as the third generation of Stevens family leadership. His addition marked a continued dedication to preserving the traditions and values that had defined Stevens Mortuary for decades.

The following year, in September of 1975, Stevens Mortuary relocated to its present location at 5520 W. 10th Street. This newly constructed building was thoughtfully designed to better serve the needs of families, featuring a spacious chapel, comfortable visitation rooms, and a welcoming family center for gatherings and catered events.

The new facility reflected a continued commitment to providing a peaceful, accommodating environment where families could come together to honor their loved ones, share memories, and find comfort during difficult times. Today, this location remains a place of care, dignity, and support for the west side of Indianapolis.

1998

In 1998, Joseph F. Stevens, Jr. proudly purchased the family business from his father, continuing a legacy built on trust, compassion, and unwavering dedication to the families of Indianapolis. Under his leadership, Stevens Mortuary remained a true family-owned and operated funeral home, grounded in the values and traditions that had been carefully cultivated over generations.

Together, Joseph and Deborah Stevens honored not only the history of the funeral home, but also the rich and diverse heritage of the Indianapolis community. They understood that every family carries its own traditions, beliefs, and stories, and they made it their mission to ensure that each service was a meaningful reflection of a life well lived. Their commitment to personal care, attention to detail, and genuine compassion became a hallmark of the Stevens name.

Building upon a foundation established in the 1920s, Joseph and Deborah remained steadfast in preserving the integrity and purpose of the profession. Their vision extended beyond simply continuing a business—they sought to uphold a standard of excellence and a level of service that families could rely on during their most difficult times. Their guiding philosophy is best expressed in their own words: “We offer our services in order to honor a life that has been lived, and to help comfort those who grieve.”

This commitment to honoring life and supporting those in mourning has remained at the heart of Stevens Mortuary for decades. The traditions they preserved and strengthened continue to shape the way services are provided today, ensuring that every family is met with dignity, respect, and understanding.

The Stevens family has long been devoted to the Indianapolis area, not only through their professional service but also through their active role in the community. They have consistently contributed to the well-being and growth of the neighborhoods they serve, recognizing that their responsibility extends far beyond the walls of the funeral home. Community involvement has always been a central focus of their mission—demonstrating a deep sense of loyalty, compassion, and connection to the people they have served for generations.

Today, that same spirit of service and commitment continues, reflecting a legacy that is not only preserved but carried forward with pride. Stevens Mortuary remains a place where tradition, family values, and heartfelt care come together to serve the community with the same dedication that began nearly a century ago.

2012

In 2012, Joseph and Deborah Stevens entrusted the legacy of Stevens Mortuary to Wayne Tago. Since that time, the facilities have continued to evolve to meet the ever-changing needs of the community. Today, the funeral home is respectfully managed by Wayne and Melissa Tago, both licensed funeral directors.

With compassion, professionalism, and genuine care, Wayne and Melissa understand that every family is unique, with personal wishes and traditions that deserve to be honored. These wishes remain at the heart of everything the staff at Stevens Mortuary provides.

Wayne and Melissa have dedicated their lives to this profession and to the families they are privileged to serve. Together, they bring over 30 years of experience in delivering personalized, first-class funeral service. Wayne is a graduate of the American Academy McAllister Institute of Funeral Service, and Melissa graduated from the Ivy Tech Mortuary Science Program in 2018.

Their commitment to compassion, expertise, and attention to detail—combined with a deep respect for the families they serve—forms the foundation of their promise to meet and exceed the expectations of the community.

For over a century, Stevens Mortuary has remained a cornerstone of the community—honoring lives, supporting families, and upholding a tradition of service that continues to this day.
